Importation guide

Importing from China to Nigeria, explained.

What to plan, what it costs, how long it takes, and how to avoid the common mistakes.

1. Plan what you are buying

Be clear about the product, the exact variant (colour, size, capacity, voltage), the quantity and your total budget. If you are buying to resell, work out your selling price first so you know the most you can pay per unit after shipping.

For a first order from a new supplier, consider buying a small quantity or a sample before committing to a large order.

2. Choose a supplier carefully

Marketplaces such as 1688, Alibaba and Taobao list thousands of sellers for the same product. Compare more than price: look at how long a seller has been trading, their reviews, how clearly they describe the product, and their minimum order quantity (MOQ).

If you don't want to do this yourself, our supplier matching and sourcing services handle it for you.

3. Understand the full cost

The price on a supplier's page is only part of what you pay. A realistic landed cost includes:

  • Product cost, including any shipping inside China to the warehouse;
  • Service fee for sourcing, payment and handling;
  • International freight by sea, air or express;
  • Customs clearance in Nigeria; and
  • Local delivery to the park or your door.

DeeNova quotations bring these together so you can see the total before you pay.

4. Chargeable weight

Air and express freight are charged on whichever is greater: the parcel's actual weight or its volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is calculated as:

length (cm) × width (cm) × height (cm) ÷ divisor

The divisor is set by the carrier. This means light but bulky items — pillows, plastic storage, empty boxes — can cost more to fly than their weight suggests. Sea freight is usually priced by volume instead. Try our shipping calculator to compare.

5. Pick a shipping method

  • Sea freight (about 65 days): lowest cost for heavy, bulky and wholesale orders.
  • Air freight (2–3 weeks): a balance of cost and speed for most orders.
  • Express (4–5 business days): fastest, best for urgent and lightweight items.

Buying from several suppliers? Ask us to consolidate everything into one shipment to save on handling and clearance.

6. Check regulated products

Some product types face extra rules in Nigeria. Cosmetics, food, drinks and medicines may need regulatory registration, electrical products may have to meet product standards, and some goods are restricted or prohibited altogether. Requirements change, so check before importing in quantity — especially for resale.

If you are unsure whether an item can be imported, ask us before you buy.

7. Track and receive

Once your order is placed with DeeNova, each stage — purchase, warehouse arrival, inspection, consolidation, shipping, arrival in Nigeria, clearance and dispatch — appears in your account. When it is ready, collect it at the park or have it delivered to your door.

Inspect your goods on arrival and tell us within 7 days if anything is wrong.
